Darren Burfitt, 44, ignored friends’ pleas to check the heap of old National Lottery tickets building up in his Citroen DS4, a car he cheerfully calls a “shed on wheels.” It wasn’t until March 2025, while fishing for snacks for his young son, that Darren finally decided to scan his tickets using The National Lottery app.
One ticket brought a modest £3.60 win. But a second, creased and barely readable, changed everything. Manually checking the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker code from the 18th October 2024 draw, Darren realised he was now a £1 million winner! 💰

The Family’s Big Plans
Darren’s first call was to his wife, Gemma, who at first feared something bad had happened. After some shaking and convincing, the couple, parents to a four-year-old boy and six-year-old girl, set their sights on buying their first home.
