How to play Irish Lotto?

How to play Irish lotto

The Irish Lotto betting slip contains 10 columns with numbers from 1 to 47. Your objective is to populate at least one of these 10 columns with six numbers that you choose from the given set (1 – 47). In addition to the main game, you can also play the Irish Lotto feature games Irish Lotto Plus 1, Irish Lotto Plus 2 and Irish Lotto Plus (Million Euro) Raffle. Detailed instructions on how to place both physical and online bets can be found below.

There are two betting options to choose from:

  • in person from a verified retailer
  • online at The National Lottery website

Till what time can one place a bet on the Irish Lotto?

On the draw days (Wednesdays and Saturdays), you can place your last bets for the next draw until 19:45, after which the lottery closes and reopens at 20:00.

What is the cost of Irish Lotto?

Irish lotto price
  • The lowest Irish Lotto bet price is €4.00
  • Irish Lotto Plus supplementary games cost €1.00/column
  • A full lottery ticket costs €20.00 (10 columns)

🏆 Irish Lotto lottery prizes

All Irish Lotto lottery prizes are determined by the number of numbers you manage to hit. The more numbers you select in a column that match the numbers drawn in the draw, the higher your winnings. Irish Lotto presents you with a total of 8 pay lines, with no fixed jackpot (minimum €2,000,000). The jackpot amount is influenced by both when it was last won and the number of bets placed on that draw – a certain proportion of the amount won by placed bets is added to the jackpot from the last draw to form the new jackpot. The jackpot cap is then set at €19.06 million. From the second winning division onwards, the prizes are then fixed.

The probability of winning the Irish Lotto lottery is determined by the number of numbers you select from and then the number of numbers you need to draw to win. The more numbers you draw, the less likely you are to win (and vice versa). Below you will find an outline of the odds of winning according to the winning division:

Winning divisions Number of winning numbers drawn Probability

Can you increase your odds of winning the Thunderball lottery?

There is almost no way to increase the odds of winning the Thunderball lottery, as it is pure mathematics and probability that cannot be beaten. However, there are two ways to increase the odds of winning somewhat:

  • place a bet on multiple columns on a single betting slip
  • placing multiple full bets at one time

Each column bet on represents a unique six-digit combination that may just be the one drawn in the draw. The more unique combinations you place a bet on, the higher your chances of winning.

Supplementary games of Irish Lotto Plus and Irish Lotto Plus Raffle

In addition to the main game, you can play three additional games within the same betting slip. These games will increase the cost of your bet by €1.00/1 column.

Group 1 and 2

Irish Lotto Plus 1 & 2

Two of the three feature games are Irish Lotto Plus 1 and Irish Lotto Plus 2. These two feature games give you the chance to win with your bet numbers when you are unsuccessful in the main game. These feature games draw 12 numbers – first 6 numbers for Irish Lotto Plus 1 and then 6 numbers for Irish Lotto Plus 2. As this is exactly the same game as the main lottery game, these two supplementary games share a probability table with the main game. However, they unlock 2 additional prize tables – see above.

Irish Lotto Plus Raffle

The third feature game is the Irish Lotto Plus Raffle. You are automatically entered into this game the moment you buy into Irish Lotto Plus. For this game, you will generate as many consecutive numbers from the set 0000 – 9999 as you have staked columns. (Example: if you stake 3 columns, you will get 1200, 1201 and 1202.) One 4-digit Irish Lotto Plus Raffle number is then drawn in each draw, the owner of which automatically wins €500.

Irish Lotto Plus Euro Million Raffle

The final game is a bonus game. Its activation is always announced by The National Lottery some time in advance. The principle of this game is the same as the Irish Lotto Plus Raffle, but instead of €500 in a given draw, €1,000,000 is played for.

Probability of winning the Irish Lotto (Million Euro) Plus Raffle

The odds of winning the Irish Lotto Plus Raffle and Irish Lotto Million Euro Plus Raffle are based on the number of bets sold with the add-on game active, the odds are very approximate and are 1 in 10,000. However, the probability is of course affected by the activation of the “Million Euro”, which increases bet sales for that particular draw and thus decreases the chance of winning that particular prize.

How do the Irish Lotto draws work?

As previously mentioned, the Irish Lotto draw takes place every Wednesday and Saturday at 19:55. The entire draw is conducted using a pool certified by the relevant authorities, in which 47 balls with numbers from 1 to 47 are propelled by pressure and then 6 (winning) numbers are drawn from the pool.
