There are several types of lotteries – how are they categorised?

The number of games and lotteries on offer is very diverse but generally divided into three basic segments, depending on the frequency of draws. The three segments are classic lotteries, quick lotteries and instant lotteries.

Classic Lotteries

This group of lotteries includes lotteries in their classic form, thus as we know them from earlier years (and as our grandmothers and grandfathers also knew them). Drawing of these lotteries takes place 1-2 times a day, in the case of really big lotteries 1-2 times a week (+ once in a while a special draw).

Due to the smaller number of draws, the prizes in the classic lotteries are then higher than in the case of the other two lottery groups. Compared to quick lotteries, the winnings of classic lotteries can be 100 times higher. Compared to instant lotteries, they can be 1000 times higher.

The classic lotteries are further divided into:

1) Variable: The jackpot increases according to the number of players and previous wins.

2) Fixed: Prize winnings are fixed.

3) Multiplier: The prizes have fixed multipliers according to the number of numbers hit and the amount wagered.

Classic lotteries are played both at branches of the lottery companies and online.

Quick Lotteries

Quick lotteries differ from traditional lotteries in that they have an extremely high frequency of draws. In quick lotteries, you will usually get a new draw every few seconds or minutes at most. You can expect to see hundreds or thousands of draws every day in quick lotteries. This makes these lotteries more like classic casino games such as slot machines.

Because quick lotteries draw very frequently, far fewer people participate in each game round. This means a much higher chance of winning, but also a much lower maximum prize.

Instant Lotteries

Instant lottery = scratch cards. In instant lotteries, you don’t have to wait for a draw. You can see the result immediately when you scratch off the game field. Instant lotteries are therefore a sort of combination of classic and instant lotteries, as they give you the possibility of high winnings while not making you wait long hours or days for the draw.

Scratch cards are very diverse. Apart from the attractive graphic motifs that make them great gifts, they also offer a variety of ways to uncover them and, of course, different chances of winning and amounts of main prizes. There are lottery tickets that offer really generous prizes as well as lottery tickets with more modest rewards but at the same time have a high probability of winning.

Lottery bonuses

One of the biggest advantages of online lotteries is the fact that they offer bonuses. Bonuses can significantly increase your stake in the game, and some bonuses even allow you to enter lotteries for free. Here’s an overview of all the bonuses you can expect to encounter in the world of online lotteries.

How are online lotteries played?

Online lotteries are not very different from traditional lotteries played at branches of lottery companies. Apart from the fact that registration with the lottery company is required initially, which is the equivalent of identification and proof of age at the branch, the procedure is more or less the same. That is, after logging into your lottery account, you select the lottery you want to enter and then fill in the lottery ticket, either with your lucky numbers or randomly, using a number generator. The final step is to then pay for the ticket.

Once you have paid for the ticket, instead of going into your pocket, it is deposited in your account with the lottery company where it can be stored safely. Here you can view it at any time. And if you happen to win, the money is immediately credited to your account where you can withdraw it straight away. All this without leaving the comfort of your own home.

Pros and Cons of Online Lotteries

The expansion of lotteries into the online environment has brought with it a breath of fresh air. Online lotteries offer many advantages over the traditional lotteries played at lottery company branches. Some of them are literally priceless. First and foremost is the automatic scoring of submitted tickets, which means you never miss out on a win.

In addition, the online lottery user experience gives you a great deal of options that make your everyday life easier. These include, for example, the ability to automatically submit tickets at a selected time interval, the ability to re-wager a previously submitted ticket at any time (i.e. saving your favourite numbers) or various types of bonuses.

  • You'll never miss a win
  • You'll never lose your ticket
  • Instant play
  • Sign-up bonus
  • Automatic betting slip can be set up
  • Placing bets from the comfort of your own home (no need to travel to a brick-and-mortar branch)
  • Choice of several lottery companies in the one place
  • You do not have your lottery ticket physically in your possession

Other benefits of online lotteries

Security

Licensed lottery companies, that is, companies that can officially offer their services in this territory, must provide the highest level of security for sensitive data as well as for money. Sensitive data can only be handled by authorised persons and only in a way that protects the data.
Furthermore, the Lottery Act requires maximum security of the site against external attacks, using the latest technology. The security of online lottery sites is thus easily comparable to that of online banking at any bank.

Customer Service

The current Lottery Act also has the convenience of users in mind and precisely regulates the details of the relationship between the lottery company and its customers. Because of this, players are assured that they will be paid money from their winnings.
In addition, licensing also requires that the lottery company provides at the very least basic customer support so that customers have somewhere to turn if any problems arise during use.

Maximum Winnings

The law on lottery games does not set a maximum possible prize, as is the case with casino games (slot machines, roulette, etc.).This makes online lotteries still very attractive, as they allow you to hit a very big prize “in one fell swoop”.

What are the odds of winning the lottery?

The odds of winning vary depending on the type of lottery. Of course, the higher the winning prize in a lottery, the less chance you have of winning that prize. Conversely, the lower the main prize, the better your chances of winning the lottery. Along with this, there is another logical condition, namely that the more frequent the individual draws are, the smaller the main prizes are and the more likely you are to hit the jackpot. There may be some exceptions to this rule, but they are not very frequent.

Lottery Lottery Type Draws Cost Probability of hitting the jackpot Maximum jackpot
Lotto Classic 2x weekly £2.00 1 : 45,057,474 £22,000,000
EuroMillions Classic 2x weekly £2.50 1 : 139,838,160 £190,000,000
Thunderball Classic 4x weekly £1.00 1 : 8,060,598 £500,000
Set for Life Annuity 2x weekly £1.50 1 : 15,339,390 £10,000/monthly over 30 years
Lotto HotPicks Classic 2x weekly £1.00 1 : 834,398 £350,000
EuroMillions HotPicks Classic 2x weekly £1.50 1 : 4,943,769 £1,000,000

How to increase your chances of winning an online lottery?

This is a very tricky question. Theoretically, buying more lottery tickets will increase your chances of winning the lottery, but only theoretically really. Because if you buy two lottery tickets instead of one, your chances increase ever so slightly, and you probably won’t see a positive result during your lifetime anyway.

Even if you bought 100 tickets for each draw and did this for your whole life, you would still be much more likely to get struck by lightning on your daily walk. The chances of winning the lottery are very small, almost insignificant, so it doesn’t matter whether you have one foot or both in the lottery pool.

Placing Group Bets

The idea of buying tickets together, is not entirely a bad one. However, this technique, known as a “betting syndicate”, should not be seen as a means of increasing the chances of winning, but as a way of reducing the cost of buying tickets and saving money in the long run, while still having a decent shot at winning.

In order to avoid possible fraud when placing group bets, where it typically happens that the initiator of a group bet refuses to share in the event of a win, we recommend using a dedicated feature.
A group bet allows you to buy a share in another player’s already created ticket, or to create your own ticket and offer a share in it in exchange for paying part of the ticket price. You can offer a share of a ticket in a group bet to your friends, colleagues or family members, or even to anonymous people.

check

Multi-column or System Bet

As previously mentioned, the only way to increase the odds is to bet multiple columns at once. The more tickets you have, the better your chances of winning. However, keep in mind that your odds increase only marginally.
For example, if the odds of winning the lottery were 1 in 100,000 and you bet one ticket, the odds are that you will win one in 100,000 bets placed. If you bet 10 columns, the probability of winning is 10 times out of 100,000 bets placed. Do you get the picture?

The Most Common Myths, Superstitions and Scams in Online Lotteries

Unfortunately, you will also come across numerous other “guaranteed ways” to win online lotteries on the internet, as many scammers prey on the desire or desperation of some people. Of course, you should avoid these means. Let’s take a look at the greatest myths, superstitions and scams because once you know about them, you are much more resistant to falling prey to them.

Placing Bets on Hot Numbers

Betting on hot numbers, i.e. numbers that fall more often than other numbers in recent times, is another popular myth. It is true that the probability of drawing any one number from the pool is exactly the same whether that number has fallen ten times in the previous draw or not at all.

The probability of drawing each number would only change if a human interfered with the draw in some way, for example, if the shape of the balls or their weight was disturbed.

cross

Placing Bets on Cold Numbers

Some people are convinced that the longer a number has not fallen, the more chance there is that it will finally be drawn in the next draw, so they bet on so-called “cold numbers”, i.e. numbers that have not fallen for a long time. This practice is not necessarily wrong, but it doesn’t increase your actual chances either.

Each draw stands on its own. It is not dependent on previous or future events. This activity is completely random, it is not a mental process. Therefore, before each draw, there is as much chance of a cold number falling as there is of a hot number falling (i.e. a number that hasn’t fallen for a long time, as there is of a number falling five times in a row).

In the long run, the frequency of numbers drawn will even out, so that within, say, 100,000 draws, a one will be drawn about as many times as a ten, twenty or fifty, but that’s another matter entirely. In reality, it is never possible to predict when the probabilities will balance out, i.e. when the numbers that have not yet been drawn will finally start to fall.

So betting on cold numbers is not a bad thing, it’s just that you have exactly the same chance of winning as if you had bet on any other set of numbers.

cross

Winning Number Prediction Programs

These programs are generally paid for, and needless to say, they are a waste of money. No one can predict the future, especially not so precisely that they can accurately determine the combination of several numbers being drawn in the future. And if someone really could, they would certainly not share such a thing with other players, but keep it to themselves. Therefore, it’s best to save your money and buy your next ticket with it.

cross

Purchasing an Entire “series of lottery tickets”

According to this myth, it pays to buy a whole series of lottery tickets at once, or sheets of consecutive lottery tickets, rather than individual lottery tickets. According to the people who perpetuate this myth, winning lottery tickets are spread out evenly in a series, so buying a whole lottery ticket series will eventually lead to a win.
Sadly, we have to disappoint you on this one, too. This strategy doesn’t work either. The truth is that winning tickets are printed randomly even in a series, so it can happen that even a hundred sheets of tickets in a row won’t yield a single win.

The History of Lottery Games

Historic photo of Czech lottery Sportka (First ever draw)

Lottery games have been around since time began. The Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar brought lotteries to light in the form we know today. In the Middle Ages, lotteries were used as a means of raising money to build new urban projects or to help the poor.

For example, Queen Elizabeth I used the lottery in the past as an interest-free loan to build a new fleet and repair ports. The lottery even provided people with pardons for certain crimes.

It was not until the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries that lotteries began to take on a purely recreational form.
